Bat photography is quite specialized. After all they are small and fast with an erratic flight, oh and they come out in the dark. It is important to note that you cannot photograph bats near a roost using flash. The bats in this video fly through our gardens nightly for a brief amount of time. The roost is located in a different part of the village. To photograph at or near a roost see the guidelines provided on the Natural England website. After discovering I had some pipistrelles flying over my back garden I thought it would be fun to see if I could get an image using my camera, flash, cable release and tripod. This is how I got on.
Man Vs Badger (this one almost broke me!)
This video took so much work with a subject that over the years has never caused me a problem. This time for what ever reason I just could not get the badgers to come out of the sett before dark, at least not where I expected them too. I did get there in the end…sort of!
Macro photography with the Sony 90mm F2.8 Macro lens
After looking at budget methods to get into macro photography I decided it was high time I gave my new macro lens a proper outing. In this video I use the lens exclusively on its own and then with a extension tubes to see if I can get images greater than one to one size. I finish off by using the lens with a flash and diffuser. Is this lens a stellar macro performer? Watch and find out.
How to Photograph Wild Barn Owls
This week I attempt to photograph wild barn owls. This video is actually the accumulation of at least ten sessions at the same site. The owls here have been very erratic making it difficult to anticipate there movements and figure out the best time to catch them out hunting. Find out how I get on in this weeks barn owl video.
Getting started with Macro Photography
This week I head out with my Sony A7r3 and macro lens. As a wildlife photographer I am often busy photographing the larger birds and animals in the environment. However as we move towards summer I also focus on the smaller creatures and plants that surround us and often go un-noticed. A macro lens is a great way to discover the smaller world that surrounds us and enables the skilled photographer to create wonderful images, often very close to home. In this video I give you an introduction to the macro world and tips to help you get the most from your macro lens. This video does not cover any kit other than a camera lens and possibly a tripod. Future videos will cover more complex techniques such as the use of flash and focus stacking but this video will provide the new macro photographer with the information to create some wonderful images.
Bird Photography on a short holiday in Cumbria
This was one of those occasions when you go away for a break but end up doing photography as well so why not make a video about it. Not of interest to everyone but this is a fascinating part of the UK being on the west coast of Cumbria. We stay in Ravenglass on the coast with its wonderful miniature steam railway that takes you into the heart of the Lake District as well as the imposing and magnificent Muncaster Castle a great place to visit but made even better by the Bird of Prey Centre located here and the flying displays in the grounds. As you can see in three days we packed a lot in and I still managed to get some images and film. I hope you enjoy it!
